Malone Family Album

Julia Malone, Noot's executive chef and personal merchandiser, has been on hand at many occasions throughout the year. The following is a glimpse of the groop, friends, and fam thru the watchful I of her camera over the course of 2008.

Will auld acquaintance be forgot and ne'er be brought to mind? For the most part yes, but glancing thru Julia's photos reminded me to give a special shout to the haters at The Globe who owe us several hundred dollars...Noot lives on in '09, where YOU at now? Tak a right gude-willy waught!

Get Together

We here at the NootLab don't necessarily attach ourselves to any particular set of morals, but we really ain't with violence, abuse, and jack moves. So when we heard that our homies Chris Devoe and Rachael from Sopo Bikes were subjected to a recent home invasion, our mellow was more than a little harshed. Fortunately, everybody is still standing, the APD gumshoes are on the case, and once again the Atlanta music scene is ready to come together and stir up a benefit for this unfortunate set of events. The stick-up kids snatched up a good chunk of Chris' gear, and he won't be able to make beautiful albums like 2008's The Perception of Obstacles until he re-ups the studio.
This is where you, dear noot fan, step in. Show up this Thursday, Dec. 9th, to the Highland Inn (one of our favorite nightspots) for an evening packed full of fun for the greater good. Deejays, Noot d' noot, The Gaye Blades The Spooks, and maybe a couple more Atlanta troublemakers will all be performing, there will be door prizes and cheap drinks, and hopefully, we can move past all the pain without missing a beat.

Beleaguered and Belated

Check out our main man Smoofus, finally gettin' the props he deserves with a roll call (she boogie, check us out).

This ain't no hay ride

You think loading up a 9 or 10 piece band into a cargo van and cruising around Music City is easy? Hell, its bad enough trying to get everybody together at home. But, we did it, and for a couple tacos and a liberal view on bar tabs, we'd take Blue Steel to your hometown too. The unfortunate thing about our ride is the high seat to cheeks ratio. Here, Crab Louie's face perfectly exemplifies how it feels to lose at Noot d' noot musical chairs.

Vistas. We're seriously considering adding a "scenic backdrop" requirement to our rider. Our man in Nashville, Joe Baine Colvert, put us up proper with flatscreens and Fat Tire, as well as this lovely view of Brentwood, Tennessee.

When Noot comes to town, it may be a good idea to go ahead and reserve the top floor of your local Irish pub in case the band needs to sit for a spell and unwind. Suggested recreational activities include darts, chess, checkers, and Jameson.

"Oh, and hey, um, Grimey's Records? This is Electro Siren. I think we're gonna be a little bit late for that in-store. Circuit Diva and I are all heeped up on Irish Coffee."

Time honored Traditions

Back in 2004, Jiggle City was a different place. Gunslingers, gangsters, confidence men, and dope peddlers ran the street. The kind of place pious mothers threatened to send their naughty children, and the type of town unscrupulous mothers knew that their children would end up. One faint glimmer of hope still shone. One band of brothers believed in happier, more peaceful times, where those with badunkadunks could earnestly shake their junk, where music was made with more than machines. A place where the simple call of "polter" and the reply "geist" could echo across the land and into the hands of every empty heart.
Those men were the Good Friday Experiment. Four longhairs with a passion, and an opening slot at the Roxy Theatre in Atlanta for the My Morning Jacket show.

(due to label woes and missed deadlines, the audio for this performance is not available. please enjoy a chemically enhanced substitute.)

A New Rising Sun

Fly on brother Mitch.  You put a spell on thee.  Thanks for the scenery.  Just let us know...we're all brothers and sisters aren't we?

Auric Sight and Seen

If your eyes have been recently recepting a narrow range of frequencies of ElectroMagnetic vibration, we request your attendence at the "Fun Art Time" show by Squanto on the Saturday of November 22nd at Mint Gallery. Squanto has provided Noot with visual trancendence since our inception, and we intend to honor her this day with a bembe drum get together lead by IlÄ• Tambor. Your RGB sensors will be stretched well beyond the .3 to .7 micrometer standard, as spectrum itself may need redifining.  Come home to the gay tee pee and rest your astral body in a room of rainbow pillows.  You will then be covered by the starblanket, as translators of the Oracle will guide you upon your iced jose' tussin vision quest.  Don't miss it.

Pre-Millennium Tension: Good Friday Experiment 12/29/99

Dig it.  The last wednesday of the decade, century, millennium.  You remember?  Either the future was nearly here or the compruters were gonna shut down.  Was it stepping into tomorrow or Babylon?  Well, it didn't really happen overnight like it was sposed to, it was more of a slowly and surely thing.  Some real life national tragedies followed by travesty. Fiber optic bluffing, dollar bill turning to no-thing, innanet chaffing, and a quick trajectory to nathan. AND some real shit music to go along with it all.  I mean, we got worse music than the 80's in the 2000's.  But hey, didn't you feel a little light last week?

I pulled this tune from the Beyond Failure blog and if you dig, the whole show is there, and a ton of other historical Atlanta musical adventures.  This here tune was a standard in the Mach 1 line up of Good Friday Experiment. It uses the key of D, which i think can be proven as the greatest key for drone on the guitar instrument.  As for rhythms, i would argue 3's and 6's are more shamanically trans-inducing than 2's and 4's, though not quite as easy to dance to.  What do you think?

Metamorphoses Lycanthropae: Possunt Inquam

New to the uploading game, i did'na realize quality control was needed when choosing a host. So, we'll try it again. Here's all the recently posted files on the sphere from a new space in time:

So we'll see you all friday right?  Noot is the cosmic light conductor and the peoples debt collector.  Watch out mr. business man......your empire's about to blow. Won't you come have a listen at the unicorn, in the case you do not know?

Profile: Spotlight on The Brothers Funk

If you've ever caught a Noot d' Noot/Brothers Funk party, you already know.......But for those who haven't, its time to double your funk this halloween.
Cats been holding down the Q since the late 90's, but you can find them anywhere from the Botanical Gardens to some true blue light house parties.  When we get together, doing our thang.....its a mother.
Brett Eclectic truly lives up to the name, pulling crazy 180's when you least expect it.  Man can read the crowd and find the song, believe it.  Dig  Brett Eclectic's Sure Shot 2: Stage Lights  mix for a serious dose of deep Electro-funk cuts.  And for those too young to remember when Mick Jagger teamed up with the Jacksons.....you're in for a state of shock.  Cozy Shawn maintains the cool that he has to maintain in order to share the funk with you.  He's been digging thru the fam's records since he was knee high and he will take you there.  Get Cozy and dig Cozy Shawn's Black Action Themes.
When Samhain arrives, won't you invoke the avatar and bloweth upon the cosmic strumpet with us? You owe yourself a choked-out friday nite, right?

Let's dig on a little B'more, shall we?

Maybe the weirdest show of the microTOOR, Baltimore ended up being a hoot nonetheless. Despite initial concerns regarding the widespread use of Yamaha backline instruments and amplification, Noot still managed to sprinkle a lil' Goofer Dust on the largely Grown and Sexy crowd that was assembled. After the show, I was given a VIP tour of the grounds that concluded with a doobinterlude on the tippytop of the building. That heady scene produced this jaw-dropping still life of something set against something else. A heartfelt "Preciate Cha" goes out to our B'more brother from a different mother, the inimitable Jason Dove.

Here's Jason right now with our very own Dream Sanitation backstage at the club. I wonder what's going on. No, seriously. I wonder what's going on.

Nuff said, bra.

A Foggy Notion: Pre-show festivities begin @ Iggy's

Those of you familiar with the condition "tonite-iss" may also be aware of it's more potent and nefarious cousin "Outoftown-osis". A dangerous affliction; OTO leaves the sufferer believing his or her known tolerances are conveniently governed by geographical boundaries and thusly do not accompany the physical body beyond "state lines". Sadly, this ailment spread quickly through the close quarters of Blue Steez and soon spilled onto the sidewalks of Ludlow St., Manhattan. This photograph clearly illustrates Dream Sanitation is what the medical community commonly refers to as "Patient Zero".

Blue Steez

A brief lil' photo diary of our recent tour up the East Coast, from the eye of Dookie Platters: Blue Steel, the lovely ship that sailed us up I-95, came well equipped. Much like the on-stage synth console piloted by Dream Sanitation, this van's dash contained many of Noot d' Noot's vital supplies: fresh fruit, duct tape, Emergen-C, stacks of cash, lighters, and multiple cassette tapes.

Efectiv all smiles after smashing one of our many on-board freestyle battles. Blue Steel Airways provides many wonderful amenities, and insane lyricism is only the tip of the iceberg. Arriving in New York, bumpin' "Jiggle City", and geeked up on adrenalin. All of this faded pretty quickly as we exited the Holland Tunnel and realized what navigating a 16-passenger van through the Big Apple was all about.
Two shows down, some of our boys share a gangster lean against B'more bricks.

Crab Louie and Skins look a little out of place in the sports bar. But hey man, Noot d' noot is a squad of versatile motherfuckers.
A pre-show run to the liquor store led Dookie and Dream Sanitation straight into Baltimore's Red Light District. Never dissuaded, the brothers emerged unscathed, bottle in hand, and even got a chance to document things from their own syrup-induced point of view.

If you want pictures of the shows, I'm sorry, most of us were a little busy up on stage and couldn't stop for snapshots. But be on the lookout for more Noot d' noot adventures above the Mason-Dixon.

My White Sugar Bicycle

For our first installation of free out and alt takes from the Goofer Dust LP, we'd like to present the demo version of Sugar Bicycle.  Collaborating is one of Noot's favorite pastimes, and we were enthralled to have Jason Dean and The Options come thru and bless this track.  This is the demo we gave Jason to work out some vocal ideas.  So here you have a stereo mix out of the MPC into garageband with a coupla passes by Dream Sanitation on the SH-101.

Strangely, there is a clarity to this demo and a little more bass response than on the album.  The reason being, at the time the album was mixed and mastered (spring '07), only one company was making analog tape.  So at this time Noot would like to extend a two finger salute to the one and only RMG International, responsible for more tape shedding than any other analog tape manufacturer in history.  Your bullshit product has the noisefloor on two of the songs we mixed to your tape well above every other sound in the song.  Due to our label's incredibly small budget, we were not able to remix these tracks.  But you know, what's done is done, and we on to the next song anyhow.  Please learn from Noot's mistakes and do not purchase RMG tape.  You now have an option, and ATR is the way to go.

Without further ado, take a ride on the Sugar Bicycle.  And be sure to check out the incendiary debut single by Jason Dean and the Options available on Solutionist Records now!

Sweet Thangs

bout 1970 or 71, Ginger Baker took a land rover from the Mediterranean down thru the Sahara Desert into Nigeria just to hang out with Fela and soak in some Yoruba rhythms. Along the way, he came across some very interesting local musicians and up and coming afro-beat groups. The Lijadu Sisters make an appearance as well as Segun Bucknor, whose live set featured here is unlike any of his available recordings. Baker got some pretty amazing footage of Bucknor's group which comes across as thrash-metal afro-beat in these clips, propelled by the mad abandon of his dance troup, The Sweet Things. This brings up an interesting point to all the haters who wanna know why Efectiv doesn't sing every song in a Noot set. Did it ever occur that you've missed the point?

it may even be sweeter in 6/8....as for efectiv, you'll be able to hear more from them when their debut single drops this fall on Solutionist.

Friday Nite in the Universe

You ever heard these cats?  Good Friday Experiment was into celestial navigation at a time in Atlanta musical history when graph calculators were required to write songs.  The earliest incarnation started up towards the tail end of 98.   Interestingly, 3 out of 4 members from the classic mach 2 line-up are known Noot conspirators, while the 4th is alleged to be the group's personal engineer on the 2" reels.  If interested, The Living Room studio is available to all who may need to store information on magnetic reels......

As can be imagined, rehearsals were comprised of deep explorations in the mind via unadulterated improvisations...just how many of these were captured?  Not enough, but there are a few.  How 'bout this piece from the mach 3 line-up circa April 2006?  This was picked up on that tiny lil' mic on yr g4 and just as the band hits full tilt, the shit overloads.  Alas, the measurements of a Good Friday trip remain uncalculated.........more later.

The Noots Come Out at Night

Perhaps you made it to the jai alai soundfest superbowl earlier this summer at Whirlyball.  Noot d'noot, Dark Meat, and Diplo all joined forces for a Chunklet throw-down.  The folks over at Mad Decent created a visual record of the Diplo/Dark Meat seven-inch born of this celestial marriage.
Check for close-ups of the perpetually gorgeous girls from Efectiv, and an interview with Dr. Kinje, all around the six-minute mark.

listening to miles...

miles davis music is the sound of rain at night. trees silhouetted in the winter moonlight. a dog barking in the distance. glittering silence. golden pauses. the held breath of the sun as clouds pass over. cool water against dry skin. smoke curling from a red glass ashtray into a dim room. a car horn outside. suspicions about the nature of the soul. addiction and the face of darkness. descent and despair and redemption.

it's about a particular note and its exact placement in space. dark matter. gravity. the heavy weightlessness of the truth being translated thru a trumpet. all the possibilities contained within one man. the edges of the universe and how to walk upon them.

it's the sound of emptiness dancing. a conversation between human beings on one small shard of bright blue rock hurtling towards our collective ends with a smile on our faces. and up ahead, we glimpse a razor blade and a prayer. a sketch of someplace we've never been, but return to always.

one magic horn with an infinite voice singing.

Profile: Spotlight on Dr. Kinje

First chair of the Noot horn section, musical director, preacher to the choir and king of fiyah, this M.D. makes house party calls, and lets face it, there's a 1 in 4 chance he's bedded down with your lady. I don't say that to upset you, or cast dispersions on your current relationship, but more as a reminder to wash your hands.  The doctor is dirty.
To watch the Dr.'s musical development is an amazing journey into the roots of Noot.  Let us first ponder the 1994 beer olympics in NYC, where we find the young med student piloting his first ensemble, Habeas Corpses......

Just two years later, the doc was getting his masters with The Purkinje Shift, quite possibly the most precise hour of music to be found in A-town in the late 90's/early 00's.  Nah, definitely. Somewhere along the way, Kinje learned to play saxophone, lending a reed to countless beatmakers and ensembles across the land...and he would like to lend something to you, a mix heady enough for you to use while working thru the cosmic equation.  Whatever your prodigious conundrum, Dr. Kinje has the cure...

"Dinosaurs Lament" - African Head Charge
"Infogee Dub" - Fieldwork
"Bush Baby" - Arthur Blythe
"Mama Too Tight" - Archie Shepp
"Transmit Regardless" -David Tom's Prezens
"Headlong" - Fieldwork

All the Noot that's Fit for Print

A few months back, Noot d'noot met with Southeast Performer magazine for a little patio chat. Local journalist Ben Grad originally invited the band to 11:11 teahouse (R.I.P.), but Bimbi quickly requested a venue change after discovering that "that place doesn't have booze." Truthfully, there's no real point in attempting to get to know Noot without first getting your head right. (Photo courtesy Noah Culver.)

Top Seven at Seven

Noot d'noot makes creative loafing's crib notes two weeks in a row. Shouts out to Criminal Records, where the only person ever asking you if "fries go with that shake" is this guy....

Profile: Spotlight on Efectiv

Y'all wanna meet this band? Aiiight, ladies first. Circuit Diva and Electro Siren, collectively known as Efectiv, came into the studio to do some vox on jiggle city last summer and haven't left the Noot camp yet.  Though they joined up after most of the goofer dust was gathered, they have become a prominent addition to the live set.  Look for their debut single this fall on Solutionist Records.

In the meantime, you can check out Electro Siren performing with Summer Hill's finest, Mar-won, on A-towns freshest cable channel, People TV.  Towards the end of the clip, you may come across an acapella version of "Fingers Like Steeples" which will be found on Noot's 2009 follow-up to Goofer Dust.  Peace to our mane, Mar-won.

In other news, the starhole will be closing for the summer on Sat. August 16. Hope you can join us.

Duly Crib Noted

Somewhere between master of puppets and portishead's 3rd, the dust now rests of the shelves of your local camelot, turtles, and sam goody's.  Local music journalist Chad Radford recently conversed w/ several Noot's for a bloggins on Creative Loafing's Crib Notes.  Radford dug deep to find out why Noot has turned from its punk rock roots and begged the question, "Has Atlanta's garage rock scene reached critcal mass?"  Find out who's more punk here.

"In the United States it is called goofer dust and there is a great deal of laughter from educated people over it.  The idea of some old witch doctor going to a cemetery at dead of night to dig arm-length deep in a grave for dirt with which to harm and kill seems ridiculous.  Now, wait just a moment before you laugh too hard at this old hoodoo man or woman of magic.  Listen to some men of science on the same subject."- Zora Neal Hurston, from Tell My Horse

Noot Schwag, Ephemera, and Paraphernalia

It appears that the Goofer Dust on 12" Vinyl arrived today at the residence of Mr. Troy Stains, CEO of International Hits Records. Street Release date is next Tuesday, July 22nd. Included in this package is a poster from devout Noot artist, Squanto b/w detailed liner notes by Noot archivist, Sgt. Gary Flowers, chronicling the origins of d' Noot. Also included is a digital backup of the album on a format known as "CD".  If you wanna get involved right now, the entire album is streaming off the International Hits blog waiting to pleasure your tympanic cavity.

Got some T-shirts in as well, featuring the logo forged by A-town street disciple, Born.  Incidentally, Born is the mastermind behind the artwork that Mr. Troy Stains used  for graphic inspiration while laying out the cover of Goofer Dust. Thanks to all those who came out this weekend to the EARL for the CD release show. We hope all can join us for the proper unleashing of the vinyl at the third installment of Worming The Starhole, July 26th w/ Judi Chicago and The Spencer Garn Quartet.

On another note, you might enjoy investigating our kindred spirit, Mr. Chris Cunningham, and his collection of strange tales from this animal life. Check and see what he's got growing in his garden Upright Against The Savage Heavens.  Here you will find the wisdom of a true freak we are lucky to have walk amongst us.

Thought for the Day - Week 28

The only thing one can give an artist is leisure in which to work. To give an artist leisure is actually to take part in his creation. -Ezra Pound, poet (1885-1972)

Keep an eye out for random posts by DJ Dookie Platters, Effectiv, Dr. Kinje, Crab Louie, Dream Sanitation and Bimbi Smoofus Thomas as they have all become resident authors of this blog. Righteous.

Also, don't forget about the Goofer Dust Release Show with Judi Chicago on Friday at the EARL and Dark Meat/Diplo/Noot show at Whirlyball on Saturday. See yous there.

Worming the Starhole - Part One

Saturday May 17 was the first in the series of several "Worming the Starhole" performances by Noot d' Noot and Judi Chicago at the world famous Lenny's Bar in Atlanta. Some new tunes were played, including "Livin' The Life" and a newly arranged "Balm Yard". One surprise was "Chunky Dunk", which we usually play for about 2 or 3 minutes without much stretching out or improvisation, but this night it was brought to a full 7-minute conclusion.

Check it out here: Chunky Dunk Wormed through the Starhole

Here is the flyer from the show:

See you at Worming the Starhole, Part Two with Judi Chicago on June 21 at Lenny's - where else?
