April 18th, 2009, a wonderful time for weekly worship of Saturn, Sweet Peas. Services commence at 4 PM, live against the back wall of that seminal shop Criminal in celebration of all those who peddle and push sonic reproductions. Many of our and your close associates will be pumpin' up the jams all day and designer jeans will surely be half-off, if you catch my drift.
Launch forward to 8 or 9PM when the doors swing open at ye Smith's Olde Bar with y'all's truly opening for lyrical assailants Collective Efforts. Baby, it's you.
Close out your evening with some old fashioned Science Fiction in the Cafe at MJQ. The dranks are heavy and the turntables get wobbly, but do not fall. We like to start songs right about where the bass kicks in and end them just before the fade out, so if you like to mash it up, but not necessarily mash-ups, this is your type of party. Shakedown Records Revival

Cheers everybody.  This is Bohannon aka Belmont aka "Bananas" Foster signing into the Noot blog for the first time.  Way way back in the day, I brought synthesizers, 4 String SG's, a camera, and brownies to these Noot boys jams.  Back in the days when they called themselves Seventy Spacebird and Beale Street Green, before finally settling into the name Good Friday Experiment for the better half of a decade.  We put together a handful of releases on Shakedown Records, and its time to revive this moniker.

Over the next few months, we hope to digitally reissue some of the early Shakedown releases which are experiencing their tenth anniversary.  We will do so here on the Noot blog, so as to consolidate our innanet affairs.

The real news is, a vinyl release is on the way from the newly revived Shakedown.  Noot has submitted their new works. Originally conceived as a 12" single for their live set standard "Fingers Like Steeples," the record has grown into 30 minutes of club banging mayhem.

That's right, "Cash For Gold" is in B'more as we speak.  Test pressings are being cut.  Tue, June 16th is the street date and the record release show is going to be at the Earl on Sat June 20th.  Ile' Tambor will call the spirits and the list of A-town DJ's is narsty:

House Of The Drum

We don't call him Skins for nothin'.  Aside from all the patterns woven across Noot music and leading his own group Ile' Tambor, Skins Malone custom crafts his own drums.  Drums from all over the world and drums in all sizes.  Seems as of late he's been hangin' with the houngans and churning out quite a few
new instruments.  To your left you may be witnessing the world's smallest functioning conga drum, complete with goatskin head.  Above a handpainted shaker.  On the right, a set of large wooden bongos roped tuned with African cow skin heads.  And below, a traditional style Japanese Chu-Daiko Drum.  Skins made this taiko drum from French Oak with two cow skin heads that are securely fastened with a double row of 3/4" black nails.  Can you imagine the nasty bass tones that emanate from this drum?  Skins has set up an online shop where you can find these one of kind elegantly crafted pieces.  Check out his Online Store.

Reunited: Double EP We're all Excited

      Just this week, as Tapeworm Rawls and I were strapping EQ's on some new joints, we heard a knock at the door.  It was Belmont Foster (aka "Bananas"), our old friend and CEO of Shakedown Records, the label that released our "Goofer Dust Mixtape" and many of our past projects including Good Friday Experiment.  We laughed about the good ol' days, and listened thru some of the raw materials.  Filled with enthusiasm and excitement, B picked up the house strat and layed down some tasty licks on a new track called "Light Of Day."  

      So it seems even at this dour economic hour, B is ready to get back in the game.  Coincidentally at this point, Noot has seen several projects go belly up in the last 8 months and is holding many a fresh cut.  Do you see where this is going?  Look for some new shit before summer gets rolling.  Since we've been collaborating with a lot of folk and we've seen several single offers come and go, you are more likely to see a 12" and a mixtape than our second album proper.  We'll let you know more as we know more.  It's in us and its got to come out.

Other day, we got a microphone in front of Chris Cunningham. He's working on a letters on tape project with his friend Hosho. Chris then proceded to read some poems. Then we put some some june bugs on it. Then we pitched some 1/8th inch tape drones over it. He's got a little sample of it over here. You don't like poetry readings? I don't either, and for that matter neither does CC. That being said, this is something in and of itself. What's it sound like? A mind crumping sodomy, Revolution. Dig it.

Creative Loafing recently caught up with James Joyce to find out how to make order out of chaos. Somewhere, somehow, he has proof that it happened, so don't try and deny it. Your first band's shite demo will see the light of day. The following is a transcription of exchanged thoughts:

A self-described librarian of rock, 33-year-old Joyce posts long-lost songs, photos, fliers and anecdotes from Atlanta’s underground music scene on his blog, Beyond Failure. He also has played with a bunch of Atlanta bands over the years — most recently with psych-funk collective Noot d’ Noot.

CL: How did you come up with the idea for Beyond Failure?

JJ: I’ve probably been in 20 bands or so. And I’m kind of by nature an archival person. I’m kind of a librarian.

That’s a rare combination for people in bands.

I think it’s because I’m a drummer. I’m just more systematic in the way I think and the way I organize myself. I’m more organized than a lot of my bandmates. Everyone has moved 100 times, and nobody has their old records, their old tapes, old flyers, old pictures. They started contacting me and asked if I had any of the old recordings, because theirs were all gone.

So I started digitizing all these old demo tapes, old records and seven-inches and stuff. And I started posting them up on this blog, rather than just emailing them to everybody.
Then I started posting stuff by bands I was friends with at that time, in the ’90s. I really like their music, and it’s really hard to find a lot of their stuff. Everything local is out of print. It’s good to just collect a lot of that stuff and make it available, for historical purposes. Because otherwise, you won’t be able to find it.

Julia Malone, Noot's executive chef and personal merchandiser, has been on hand at many occasions throughout the year. The following is a glimpse of the groop, friends, and fam thru the watchful I of her camera over the course of 2008.

Will auld acquaintance be forgot and ne'er be brought to mind? For the most part yes, but glancing thru Julia's photos reminded me to give a special shout to the haters at The Globe who owe us several hundred dollars...Noot lives on in '09, where YOU at now? Tak a right gude-willy waught!

Get Together

We here at the NootLab don't necessarily attach ourselves to any particular set of morals, but we really ain't with violence, abuse, and jack moves. So when we heard that our homies Chris Devoe and Rachael from Sopo Bikes were subjected to a recent home invasion, our mellow was more than a little harshed. Fortunately, everybody is still standing, the APD gumshoes are on the case, and once again the Atlanta music scene is ready to come together and stir up a benefit for this unfortunate set of events. The stick-up kids snatched up a good chunk of Chris' gear, and he won't be able to make beautiful albums like 2008's The Perception of Obstacles until he re-ups the studio.

This is where you, dear noot fan, step in. Show up this Thursday, Dec. 9th, to the Highland Inn (one of our favorite nightspots) for an evening packed full of fun for the greater good. Deejays, Noot d' noot, The Gaye Blades The Spooks, and maybe a couple more Atlanta troublemakers will all be performing, there will be door prizes and cheap drinks, and hopefully, we can move past all the pain without missing a beat.
