listening to miles...

miles davis music is the sound of rain at night. trees silhouetted in the winter moonlight. a dog barking in the distance. glittering silence. golden pauses. the held breath of the sun as clouds pass over. cool water against dry skin. smoke curling from a red glass ashtray into a dim room. a car horn outside. suspicions about the nature of the soul. addiction and the face of darkness. descent and despair and redemption.

it's about a particular note and its exact placement in space. dark matter. gravity. the heavy weightlessness of the truth being translated thru a trumpet. all the possibilities contained within one man. the edges of the universe and how to walk upon them.

it's the sound of emptiness dancing. a conversation between human beings on one small shard of bright blue rock hurtling towards our collective ends with a smile on our faces. and up ahead, we glimpse a razor blade and a prayer. a sketch of someplace we've never been, but return to always.

one magic horn with an infinite voice singing.

Profile: Spotlight on Dr. Kinje

First chair of the Noot horn section, musical director, preacher to the choir and king of fiyah, this M.D. makes house party calls, and lets face it, there's a 1 in 4 chance he's bedded down with your lady. I don't say that to upset you, or cast dispersions on your current relationship, but more as a reminder to wash your hands.  The doctor is dirty.
To watch the Dr.'s musical development is an amazing journey into the roots of Noot.  Let us first ponder the 1994 beer olympics in NYC, where we find the young med student piloting his first ensemble, Habeas Corpses......

Just two years later, the doc was getting his masters with The Purkinje Shift, quite possibly the most precise hour of music to be found in A-town in the late 90's/early 00's.  Nah, definitely. Somewhere along the way, Kinje learned to play saxophone, lending a reed to countless beatmakers and ensembles across the land...and he would like to lend something to you, a mix heady enough for you to use while working thru the cosmic equation.  Whatever your prodigious conundrum, Dr. Kinje has the cure...

"Dinosaurs Lament" - African Head Charge
"Infogee Dub" - Fieldwork
"Bush Baby" - Arthur Blythe
"Mama Too Tight" - Archie Shepp
"Transmit Regardless" -David Tom's Prezens
"Headlong" - Fieldwork
"JJ" - Fly
"Contort Yourself" - James Chance

All the Noot that's Fit for Print

A few months back, Noot d'noot met with Southeast Performer magazine for a little patio chat. Local journalist Ben Grad originally invited the band to 11:11 teahouse (R.I.P.), but Bimbi quickly requested a venue change after discovering that "that place doesn't have booze." Truthfully, there's no real point in attempting to get to know Noot without first getting your head right. (Photo courtesy Noah Culver.)
