Symbol Of Sound Progress

The Hal Al Shedad will be performing for the first time since April of '99 this Saturday nite at the Drunken Unicorn. Call it a reunion or a proper last show, but don't miss it. This was some intense, intricate, and immediate music from an era long gone. Includes Noot member James Joyce on drums and our personal engineer, Ed Rawls. Some Soviet Station will also miraculously reform all for the well being of Mr. Gavin Frederick. 13 years on, this cable still powers the Spirit Of Nashville.

Sticky

Dookie Platters

Residencies:

Every first Saturday at El Myr and every last Saturday at the Highland Inn.

Sounds:

I started off with rap and Southern hip-hop, but now I involve more diasporic African stuff that leads into hip-hop through traditional African music to Caribbean and dancehall. I'm also into Cumbia and South American music that takes its rhythmic cues from the traditional percussion of Africa. So hip-hop, dub step, Cumbia, reggae and Afrobeat are the main genres that I spin.

Complementary drugs:

Definitely a blunt. A fat blunt of some sticky weed and a couple of beers just to get you right. You don't want to go too far overboard.

Late Night Round Up.

'Em Sigh

Dean and Leon dropped their first names and got into some crazy shit for this single. Went so far out, they almost forgot about it but apparently decided to release it today to the U n I verse. With appearances from the Noot Fam to boot. Dig it and get it right H E R E.

Stay There

Gotta say I'm looking forward to this.

Q & A

Mathis Hunter’s debut solo LP, Soft Opening, finds the Atlanta music veteran wrestling with the missing link between the cosmic funk of Noot d’ Noot and the face-melting psych rock of Good Friday Experiment. With Soft Opening, Hunter steps out from behind the drums to craft 10 songs of expansive, guitar-driven rock. The album looks to the haze of slow pop and distorted ambiance of such British shoegazer rock acts as Primal Scream and Spiritualized, but tempered by rich, American country harmonies via the Byrds. But the layered vocals have more in common with David Crosby than the ornate twang of Gram Parsons, all washed in waves of colorful nostalgia. The album is a different beast for Hunter altogether, that sidesteps the tongue-in-cheek party-freak vibe of the Noots and the earnest head trips of GFE for a fun, but coolly artistic mode of rock and roll.

You’ve always had a strong psychedelic sensibility, but it’s played up much differently here than it has with the Noots or GFE.
The place where the songs are coming from is just very different. In GFE, I started out as the guitar player but became the drummer because our drummer quit. So it was my job to bring the rhythms. This is a chance for me to get back to playing guitar, and it’s more melodic. The psychedelic thing — me and Justin and Rich are always trying to bring that our of each other, and they’re on the record a lot.

Space Is The Place

Back about 10 years ago, The Spirit of Nashville and I watched it at the White Lodge and were so blown away, we had to rewind the tape and watch it again. Pure inspiration for your weekend, in its entirety!

SOFT MF OPENING

Noot d' noot's very own Bimbi Garraux (performing as Mathis Hunter) has finished recording your 2010 psyche-rock opus, just in case you were wondering where it was. Check out the poster/album cover by Squanto (what a babe!) and be at the EARL March 5th for a helluva time.

Rumor has it Petrichor Inc is putting the final touches on the video for the album's lead single, Gathering the Hopeful Gamblers. Even more rumors have it that Stephen Key, head animator at Petrichor, will be celebrating 30 years on this blue marble come March 5th. Get got damn down!

Sincerely Yours-
Dookie Platters the Boots Knockin Panty Dropper.

Oh, here's some more press I wrote if you like reading...

Atlanta musician, art historian, and purveyor of fine goods Mathis Hunter(born Bimbi Garraux) has put together a solo record that may just surprise you. Sure, you were around for Seventy Spacebird, all the way until the Good Friday Experiment shot through your brain like the bottom of a pail breaking through. You watched him sit in the studio and on stage for a stint with the Selmanaires. These days, you've been known to drop your inhibitions (and your pants) at a Noot d' noot show or two. But this here SOFT OPENING record delves into that cannibinoid-infused corner of your psyche that you forgot existed.

Come on out to the EARL and witness this briskness while your lady gets freaky on the dancefloor. Mathis Hunter performs tracks from his solo effort, SOFT OPENING (Shakedown Records), alongside a grip of Atlanta's familiar rock n roll melted faces.

Shout Out to All Our Exes

Upcoming Sessions

As for Noot, the band will be back in the studio on February 20th at The Living Room to work on the follow up to last year's "Cash For Gold." The group has enlisted super-producer Ed Rawls to engineer the record. Other than "Fingers Like Steeples," all Noot tracks have been engineered by the group themselves, so we can expect a drastic change in the sound of this LP.

The material will be culled from the tunes featured in the band's live performances over the last year, and therefore may more closely resemble the Noot d' Noot live experience. More info as we have it. And hopefully, a Soft Opening test press tomorrow.

Funk Gets Stronger

Its hard to imagine if there would've been a Noot if it hadn't been for all the years of sitting in the cafe and asking Cozy what every other record was. What better way to spend Friday and Saturday Nite than with some good records all the way turned up. After doing it since the about the time the Q opened its doors, Cozy and Rico ended their run last Friday Nite. They'll be taking the funk to Pals Lounge starting this Friday, Feb 5. Dig it.
