Worming the Starhole - Part One

Saturday May 17 was the first in the series of several "Worming the Starhole" performances by Noot d' Noot and Judi Chicago at the world famous Lenny's Bar in Atlanta. Some new tunes were played, including "Livin' The Life" and a newly arranged "Balm Yard". One surprise was "Chunky Dunk", which we usually play for about 2 or 3 minutes without much stretching out or improvisation, but this night it was brought to a full 7-minute conclusion.

Check it out here: Chunky Dunk Wormed through the Starhole

Here is the flyer from the show:

See you at Worming the Starhole, Part Two with Judi Chicago on June 21 at Lenny's - where else?

Ejection from Drunken Unicorn

Noot d' Noot played last weekend with our soulmates Judi Chicago, and we did a little something special for the Drunken Unicorn audience. That is a cover of "Ejection" by Hawkwind, sung by the JC's and Effectiv with the Noot house band backing them up. Check it out here:
For your information, the Noot d' Noot full length LP entitled "Goofer Dust" will be released on July 8, 2008 by the International Hits record label, and there will be a subsequent official release show at the Earl on July 11, 2008 to celebrate its birth into this world.
We sincerely hope to see you there, because YOU are the fire, the dawn, and the eternity of Noot.

Gershwin By Ear

Creative Loafing recently caught up w/ Noot's own Dream Sanitation to ask him about his influences.  The following is a transcription of this encounter:

The greats from the past influence the music of today. Local musician Rich Morris, aka Dream Sanitation, can attest to that. Picking and pulling from various artists, Morris developed his own sound, playing electro funk in Noot d'Noot, psychedelic rock in Good Friday Experiment, and ambient noise in Spirit of Nashville. Here, he gives his top five list of musical influences.

1) My dad, Danny Morris: "Dad can play Gershwin by ear, has a great record collection, and you can catch him singing spirituals at Haygood Methodist most Sundays."

2) King Tubby: "'Cause I like echoing things. King Tubby was a non-Rasta Jamaican producer who tore up some tape delay."

3) Brian Eno: "Eno has done enough artistic things — Oblique Strategies and frogs that sound like synths — that it's stupid to do anything without listing him."

4) Joe Zawinul: "Weather Report's Sweetnighter has been a major influence since I heard it, as isBitches Brew. He did one of the first recordings with a Rhodes electric piano."

5) William "Bootsy" Collins: "I know Bernie [Worrell] plays mean keys, but Bootsy came into my life when I was 13. His shine puts filling in peg legs and grows hair on bald heads. Surely the secret to walking on water is knowing where the rocks are."

Noot in the Woodshed 2008

Many activities are currently afoot-foot behind the scenes at the Noot Laboratory. We have spawned a new 'Child of Noot' named Astrid, and she will be officially joining the group in 2024 once she has completed her extensive training and development process. In addition, there has been new studio action at the Noot Lab/Living Room complex for upcoming singles and feel-good hits for the summer. Hopefully the follow-up in 2008 to Jiggle City's worldwide success in 2007. On the live front, The Noot played the Georgia B-Boy finals at the Relapse Theater in Atlanta on March 1st, and we are gearing up for what could be called a summer love-in with our partners Judi Chicago, including the following dates:

April 12, 2008 at The Drunken Unicorn

May 17, 2008 at Lenny's

June 21, 2008 at Lenny's

June 27, 2008 at Lenny's Corndogorama

July 26, 2008 at Lenny's

August 16, 2008 at Lenny's

We request your presence at as many of these performances as possible.

Noot DJ Set at Aurora Coffee in Little Five Points - Squanto Art Show Opening - January 4, 2008

A stripped-down version of Noot d' Noot (including Crab Louie, Dream Sanitation, Bimbi Smoofus Thomas, Jah Scorpion and Skins Malone) performed an augmented DJ set on January 4 at Aurora Coffee in Little 5 Points as part of an opening for the great artiste Squanto. Unfortunately no recording of this set exists, but it was a great time and I hope we can do it more in the future. Also of note is the Imperial Stormtrooper who attended the show (see picture). Brilliant.

Noot D' Noot (Live at WRASFest 07)

The one Noot show that I could not play, and we get this awesome video! Thanks to WRAS Album 88 for the show and support.

X-Mas Party at the 40 Watt - Noot d' Noot Live December 15, 2007

Thanks to Sloan Simpson for recording this - he's the dude you see with the mic setup in the center of the room at all the shows, so give him respect for preserving these shows for our grandchildren's grandchildren and all generations to come.

Dark Meat gave us free reign to stretch out and enjoy ourselves that night, so the set was long and we had a great time.

Thanks also to Tilli V. 3000 for the marquis picture. His cell phone can do anything!

Here's the set in MP3 format: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4d59dce078e59d2791b20cc0d07ba4d255c70ec84c1f642d

Enjoy the set, and see you on the 26th at the EARL with Sonn Av Krusher and Chris Devoe/Zano!

The Roots of Noot

Dream Sanitation with Ed Rawls at the Living Room circa 1998.

Here is a collection of sorts from previous bands that members of Noot have played in over the years. For more music and details, please check out my other blog - Beyond Failure, as well as Dr. Kinje's blog - Master of None. The links to these blogs are on your right.

Now let's get down to the music.

Here is the link for download, in MP3 and M4A format: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4d59dce078e59d2791b20cc0d07ba4d2efd2eac04ceba9b2

1. Sonn Av Krusher - The Widower (2007): This is a band that I currently play drums in, along with Sgt. Gary Flowers and Matt Mauldin. This was recorded at the Living Room in July for our 2007 demo tape.

2. Good Friday Experiment - The Returner (2006): Long-time supergroup including Crab Louie, Dream Sanitation, Bimbi Smoofus Thomas and Ed Rawls. I have also filled in from time to time and Mr. Craig Lee Dempsey made some excellent guitar contributions as well. They released 3 albums on Shakedown Records over the years.

3. Seventy Spacebird - Hottentot (1999): From the epic 1999 Living Room sessions, this band included myself, Dream Sanitation, Crab Louie, Bimbi Smoofus Thomas, Ed Rawls, Marus Welby Lowe (Farmer Lakemonster), and Dr. Kinje as well as Aaron from Ocelot and Mr. Craig Lee Dempsey (guitarist extraordinaire).

4. Chocolate Kiss - Saturday Nite Party (1999): Here was a band I played guitar for in the late 90's - early 00's, along with Matt Mauldin, Bob Rob Medina, and Kip Thomas. We made 4 albums on the Moodswing Records label.

5. Ultivac - Trash (1999): This was a project back when Retconned lived in Brooklyn. It features Retconned on ASR-X and vokills, myself on Drums and Benjamin Britton on Bass Guitar. We released one album on Buddy System records.

6. The Purkinje Shift - Clint (1997): This is an earlier band from Dr. Kinje, and was the most precise live band I have ever seen in my life. They released two albums on Samizdat records.

7. The hal al Shedad - Poisoned (1997): Here was band I played drums with in my college years. Ed Rawls was on guitar and Benjamin Britton on bass. We released two albums and many singles which are collected on a compilation CD that you can get through Stickfigure Records.

8. Car Vs. Driver - Without a Day (1994): Another band where I played the drums, this included Matt Mauldin on vokills with Steve "bring out the Navy" Wishart and Jon "uber positive" Rothman on the strings. We released two albums and many singles which are collected on a discography available through Stickfigure Records.

9. Midget Farmers - Lame World (1994): My first band. I am on the drums, Claus Wiener is on guitar and Eric Fickes rounds out the bass and vokill duties. We released two singles and one tape, which I have compiled onto a CD and can be downloaded on the Beyond Failure blog.

On the trail of Dream Sanitation - Noot d' Noot Practice Tapes October 15, 2007

Contrary to urban legend, the Noot actually does practice now and again, when the goofer fruit is ripe and ready to be harvested. One such time happened in October as preparations were underway for the two show 'tour de Georgia magnifique' with Boris. Included are two choice ambinoot cuts, described by Dream Sanitation as "audio dope".
Here is the link, and don't pay attention to the song titles, that was my mistake: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4d59dce078e59d27ab1eab3e9fa335cab067d1e2b830d69e

Straight from the Watkinsville Hippy Commune - Noot d' Noot Live at the 40 Watt Club, Athens 23 October 2007

Here is our show at the 40 Watt on October 23, 2007 with Boris and Damon & Naomi. Special thanks to Nick for providing Harmonium and Harp drones, as well as Henry Owings for putting us on the bill and having our back when Boris' booking agent wanted us to be dropped from the show. One interesting aspect of this show was that Boris had so much gear on stage, they would not allow the opening band to have a drum set. So in anticipation of this challenge, the Noot prepared a special ambient musical selection, which included special guest Nick as well as some rearranging of the usual instrumentation duties. Also thanks to Mike White at Deadly Designs for taking the great live photos.

Here is the link to the show, in both MP3 and M4A format (for you Itunes nerds): http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4d59dce078e59d2791b20cc0d07ba4d22edaf58245163a2b

Also thanks to the Manhattan for providing the nice Maker Mark/Ginger Beer beverages for the evening.
